Peter T. Burt

I am the owner and blacksmith of Dragon's Breath Forge, located in Edgecomb, Maine. I have been blacksmithing and bladesmithing for seven years, having started when I was 15. Ever since I began forging knives, my greatest fascination has been with damascus, and most of the knives that I make reflect this. For the past four years I have been demonstrating at The Boothbay Railway Village, where I now have my full-time shop set up. My forge is self-built, and is based on the general design that was come up with by Tim Zowada. I also designed and built both my treadle hammer and 75lb. air hammer, and it is with their aid that I am able to continue my explorations into the world of knifemaking.

Knives

#1 of my series of motorcycle chain knives. Blade is 11", guard is nickel-silver, spacer is coco bola, and remainder of handle is zericote. Asking price for a similar knife is $500.
#2 in the series, this bowie has a blade length of about 11". Guard is nickel-silver, and handle is curley maple. Asking price for a similar knife is $450.
#3 in the series is a smaller knife, with a blade of about 7". The more elongated pattern is a side-effect of having sandwiched a bar of 1095 between the two layers of chain during the welding. This makes for a more consistent cutting edge, but a more subtle pattern. Guard is nickel-silver, handle is cherry. Asking price for a similar knife is $300.
This knife is the most recent in the ongoing evolution of my simple, rustic using knives. The blade is forged from 5160 spring steel, and was clay-hardened to achieve a hard edge and softer back. I am especially happy with this knife due to the fact that it shows two temper lines rather than one. Asking price for a similar knife is $35, $45 with a simple sheath.
