Ed Schott

I love knives and knifemaking. This is what God made me for.

I've done every thing from steeple jack and gun factory rover to working for a big rolling mill manufacturer. My hobbies have been high voltage experiments, tesla coils, high temp toys (like a blast furnace in the back yard), rockets (solid and liquid fuel) and assorted fun things, including fireworks and giant flash bulbs. I was an avid hunter and fisherman but lack of time and Lyme disease has put an end to my out in the woods playtime.

Knifemaking Process

I do mostly stock removal. The blade is cut and ground to profile. Blade bevels are hand ground on a 2x72" belt grinder. I do my own heat treating with tested formulas (since I started in 1994, I've destroyed almost 100 blades in testing). All blades are now cryogenically treated for optimum strength and edge holding.

I tend to go over board on my knife making. If it has to be strong I make it really strong. Any surface that is to be soldered or epoxy joined is gritblasted so it gets good adhesion and forms a good seal. When I epoxy the handle slabs they are clamped with 300-500lb of force. My handles do not get loose.

I do mostly custom blades, since it's much more enjoyable when a customer gets a knife he or she really wants and has dreamed of. As far as patterns go, anything a customer can think up I will do. If it involves something I haven't done yet, it may just take a little longer. A customer will never hear me say, "I don't do that." All of the work is by my hands, no one els--just me.

Blade Materials

Current blade materials: CPM 3V, CPM 420V. Handle materials all of the usual wood, micarta, G-10, cord wrap.

Lifetime Guarantee

I strive for the best knife I can make and I am always trying to make them better. If another maker says, "Don't do that; do this" I try it and if it works I use it. I stand behind my knives 100%, no quibble. A lifetime guarantee is standard on every knife.
