Gerry Smith

I have been making knives for about 20 years. In the beginning it was mostly patch knives to go with my muzzle loader building hobby. One day I saw an article in our local paper about a knife maker in my town (Asheville NC) who had made knives for the movie "THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS". His name was Randall King. He invited me over to see his shop. Naturally I had to buy a knife from him. As I was leaving, he said, "Do you have any deer antler?" When I told him that I did, he handed me a piece of ATS 34 and said, "Here. Make a knife out of this. If you have any problems, come back and I'll help you work it out." He created a monster. I bought a grinder, band saw, drill press and a lot of hand tools. I wore a path to Randall's shop and he was always helpful. I create all of my knives one at a time. No two are alike. I use two logos. One reminds me I am a former Marine and the other is for my love of dogs. I have a beautiful wife of thirty-four years, who supports my passion for knives, except for the aroma of grinding horn.

Forged 1095 with curly maple. It has a 3 1/2 in. blade. A similar knife is $100.
One of my favorites to make. Sambar stag handle, blade made from an old horse shoe rasp. A knife like this sells for $225. I also make similar knives with various woods starting at $125.00.
